Carrots:

These carrots are thinned one foot apart in the row,
the between-rowspacing is five feet. The carrots got
no water whatsoever all summer. The photo was taken
in mid-July. By season's end they grew to an average
diameter of 5 inches and weighed in at over one pound each.
They were tender and sweet and with a little soil hilled up
to protectthem from freezing, kept in the garden from
October through February.
